EDUCATION NORTH AND SOUTH.

TO THE KDITOft. ' Sin, — The difference between the fees at the High Schools at Temiika and Waimate, and those prevailing at the Waikato District High Schools' is easily explained by the different conditions under which, Auckland and Canterbury were colouiflbd. The latter was founded by a company, which, charged, nominally, £3 per acre for all land, of whidh sum, however, £1 was devoted to educational and religious purposes. In addition to this, Targe endowments in land have been set apart by the Provincial Government for educacational ends. Auckland, on the contrary, was settled promiscuously, wns long weighted with Maori difficulties, and its Provincial Government either could or would not provide endowments except on a very small scale comparatively, while of course no part of the original price of land was returned to such purposes as in Canterbury. Education is not a solitary instance ; roads and bridges tell the same tale. Now, Education Boards are not legally entitled to divert any part of the funds given to them for primary education to secondary. In Canterbury there are endowments, in Auckland none ; ergo parents must pay the cost. The true course to adopt is not to grumble at paying more than Canterbury parents pay, but to see that the existing secondary endowments, such as those of the Auckland Grammar School, are returned to the purposes from which they have been and are being filched. — I am, fee Equalitt.
