CHRISTCHURCH, Saturday.
A petition is being circulated for signature praying the General Assembly to provide for grants in aid being made to denominational schools, subject to their coming up to a certain standard in attendance and instruction, also to provide for religious instruction beiug given by ministers in the public schools. Last Night. Dr Yon Haast has received £40 from the German Society of Hokitika towards the liliine Inundation Relief Fund. This makes the amount collected by the Christchurch committee £107. James Swindle was to-day fined £10, or in default one month's imprisonment, tor practising as a solicitor. He pleaded that he could not earn enough by hia trade (watchmaking) to supply himself and family.
