DUNEDIN Thursday. The German Consul intimates that Dr. Emil Reiback and Dr. Bassett intend visiting this colony on a scientific mission for the German Government. Some Chinese have found 17 or 18 ounce nuggets, but refuse to disclose ths locality. A fourth candidate is announced for foy the Peninsula in the person of Mr. John Willis. Great interest lias been vested in the election by Bishop Moran coming out. He addresses the electors to-morrow night.
PATKA, Last Night. William Dale, recently manager of the Patea Permanent Building Society, was charged at the R.M. Court with forgery. The actual offence was altering a bank pass-book to make it appear that £271 had been paid m, whereas, the correct amount was £11. He was committed for trial.
CHRISTCHURCH, Last Night. Numerous rumour 3 are afloat regarding the Selwyn seat in the House of Representatives. The first is to the effect that fcJir John Hall hid been requested to obtain leave of absence instead of vacating his seat, but he has declined, and that further measures are being adopted to induce him to change his mind. Another rumour is that he should not do so. The prominent Government men will support E. J. Lee, on whose behalf canvassing is now goiun on ; that Wakefield of Timaru was asked to come forward as a candidate, but declined ; and that the Hon. E. Richardson has been asked to offer himself as an. opposition candidate, and will probably consent.
WELLINGTON, Last Night. The Stella, which arrived from the South to-day, brings intelligence of a soineM'hnt serious misfortune as having happened to a settler on the West Coast of the South Island. Mr Stevenson, formerly manager of the .Colonial Bank at Palmerston South, having bought a station and eight-roomed house at Paranga, on the East Coast, was conveyed to that place by the Stella, and on arrival he found his house had been burned to the ground, apparently by an incendiary. Mr Stevenson then set to work to build a hut for the temporary accommodation of himself and family. It is to be hoped that the perpetrator of the outrage will be discovered aud punished.
