Hamilton East Sports.
The sports on Sydney Square on Tuesday were, both as regards the number of entries and the attendance of the public, as good as anything of the kind previously held in the township. The committee exerted themselves to the utmost and gave general satisfaction. An unfortunate eiror occurred in connection with the mile race by which one or two good runners were deprived of all chances of winning. A misunderstanding arose as to the number of laps to be run, and those referred to put on the final spurt while yet a third of a mile had to be covered. The Te Awamutu Band, under Mr Sibley, attended, and played some choice pieces of music on the balcony of the Royal Hotel, greatly enlivening the proceedings. The following is a list of the events with the results :—: — Maiden Fiat Race; eight entries.— T. Floyd, 1 ; H. Graham, 2. Hoys race (under 16 years) : five entries. — McClaurin, 1 ; M. Jones, 2. Subsequently a private trotting match foe £5 a-side came off between Mr Chitty's Nelly and Mr Hoy's Simon, the latter conceding the former 300 yards, over a three mile course. Nellie won the race, hands down. In the evening a dance took place in the Oddfellows Hall, and was very numerously attended, fully 200 people being present. The music was provided by the Te Awamutu Band, and dancing was kept up with spirit until daylight yesterday morning. Refreshments were supplied by Mr Pearson.
