WHATAWHATA. Ratepayer's Meeting.
A meeting of the ratepayers of the Newcastle Highway District resident at Whatawhata was held on Saturday afternoon for the purpose of ascertaining the public feeling on the question of borrowing money under the new Roads and Bridges Construction Act." There were about a dozen ratepayers present, and the chair was 1 occupied by Mr; Dawson. The chairman explained the provisions of . the act,' and those present appeared to be decidedly ■in favour of availing themselves of the measure, and borrowing money for road purposes. There will be another meeting, exiled for .the same object at Ngaruawahia on Saturday next, the. 2nd December, and it the settlers at that end of the district are unanimously iti favour of raising money a general meeting will be convened, and arrangements forthwith made for taking advantage of the act. The act gives the power necessary • to enable _ any portion of a district to tax itself for its own benefit, and this ought to put an end to all squabbling for local expenditure of the general rate, as has hitherto been the case. At the meeting held as above a lesolution moved by Mi E. .Shepherd, " That this meeting is in favor of adopting the honoring powers, piovided by the act" was carried unanimously, and a vote of thauks to the chair terminated the proceedings. The delay in opening the road from Harapepe to join the Raglan • road has seriously leUided the ad\ ancemeut of this district. Now that the "king" is likely to become a pakeha, Government will probably make this piece of toad, so that His Mo.jes.ty may be able to drive a buggy through his new dominions w ithout being put to the inconvenience that settlcis have ha.l to encounter. The weather lias been extieinely dry, and lain is badly wanted, although the pastures in this neighborhood are looking remarkably well.
