RAGLAN. Raglan Mail Service.
Great satisfaction has been expressed by the residents here, on receipt of the intelligence that, after all, the postal authorities have accepted Mr Johnson's tender for a coach mail service from Hamilton to Raglan.
Raglan Stone. For some time but little has been done in the way of exporting the above article from here. This may principally be ascribed to the departure of Mr J. W. Ellis, now of Kihikihi, who while he was here, carried on operations in an energetic manner at Te Haroto. When he left, the work in connection with the quarrying of the stone may virtually be said to have ceased. He has now, however, disposed of his interest in the concern to Mr Ferguson, of Timaru, who will no doubt soon have the whole affair in full working order again. He has for some time been looking for a place where he might erect lime kilns, and he gives it as his opinion that the stone at Te Haroto is by far the best he has yet seen in his travels. I believe it is his intention to export building stone as well. I wish him all success in his enterprise.
Departure of Mr Powell, J.P. With the desire of testifying to the respect which is shown for Mr Powell by the residents in this district, a meeting of gentlemen was held in the council chambers on the 1st, inst., to consider what steps might be taken on the occasion of his departure from amongst us to give tangible effect to this feeling. Mr W. Duncan, J.P., was voted to the chair, and fully explained the object for which the meeting had been convened. It was ultimately decided to entertain Mr Powell at a public dinner previous to his departure, and also make him a presentation. The following gentlemen were appointed a committee to give effect to this proposition, viz. :— Messrs Wallis, Mitchell, Ellis, Frissell, Philps, Harsant, C. Sutton, L. Sutton, Graham, Robertson, Savage, Swan, W. Duncan (chairman), R. C. Mathias (hon. secretary). The next meeting of committee will be held on the 11th inst., at 7 p.m.— (Own Correspondent.)
