Jones, it was resolved " That Mr Sims be stopped from taking gravel from this allotment in the manner he is doing at present, and that Cr. Peat and the clerk be authorised to take all necessary lueasuies to enforce the proper arrangements made by the council and the lessee on a former occasion." Proposed Dissolution ok thk BoKOtHJH. —The committee appointed to investigate the affairs of the council in n Cr. Yon .Stunner's motion for the dissolution of the borough reported as follows :—

Rll'OttrOl COMMMIII. U'I'OIMID /c'CoUN'CIMOK VOV SrUKUI'K'h MOIIO.N lOR DISSOLVING iHlt ROKOUOH. The special committee appointed by the council on the otli of October to n-port upon the motion of Cr. At a subsequent mooting held on the 2nd inst,, there were present. Crs. Corhrane, McDonald, Pe.it and Yon Stunner (chairman). •In c\hausti\ c examination was made into the <lcp.Litmciit.il cost of working the Corporation during the l.u>t three 3 cars, with the follow ing result:— It wis found that in ISBO that portion of the expenditure which might lairly be set down .is. the official or departmental co>t of working the Corporation was 1.1(55 13s 7d, m ide up as follows : salaries, L 150; stationery, 1.4 Ss 7d ; audit fees, L 4 4s; petty cash, (including telegrams, postage, &c.) 1.1 Is o<l. In ISSI the cost was LT.4'2 2s Gil. comprising the following items: salaries. In going through the accounts for the several jcars, the cost oi plans, surveys, Sec, and the tost o» printing and advertising (though at first sight appearing to come under the head ot departmental expenditure) were not taken into calculation, the first being considered as part and parcel of the works themselves, and the printing and advertising being a matter in which tne council had no option whatever, but to comply with the provisions contained m the Municipal Corporations Act in that respect. Frhdkrick J. Yon Sruion r, Chairman. November 2nd, 1382. Cr. Yon Stunner said the committee had carefully examined the accounts, with a view to determining the amount of the departmental expenditure, aud they had found it to be much more reasonable than had been supposed. Many items had been set down under the head of departmental.which could not properly be so placed, such as advertising, stationary, legal advice, &c. Of the latter, (legal advice) for instance, the greater portion of the money was on account of preparing Crown grants. At one time he believed a majority of the council and ratepayers was in favour of dissolution, but when the question came to be calmly considered, a change of opinion took place. The petitious in favor of the change had only been signed by 32 ratepayers. Of these, some, had requested that their names should be removed, while others were defaulters, and, consequently, not entitled to a vote. In these circumstances, he would ask leave to withdraw his motion in favor of dissolution.—His Worship the Mayor spoke in favor, of maintaining the borough. After fully considering the position, he had come to the conclusion that dissolution would be a retrograde 'movement.—Cr. Jones having also expressed himself as opposed to the change, it was "unanimously resolved to allow } Cr. Yon Stunner to withdraw his motion, which he did

accordingly.
