A nice gal hollered out, " Stay, oh, stay I And you may marry me right away." Adown his nose the tears did flow. " No use, young woman, I'm bound to qo — « Upwards." About that time the follerin' day A Shaker chanced to pass that way. When he suddenly thought he heard a coon A hollerin 1 out to a pensive toon — " Up'ards." His dog then rummaged and poked about And soon found out what, without any doubt, Was that poor young man buried deep in the snow, Who carried that flag with the rum motto— " Up'ards." Tucked up to his chin in the snow he lay, v In a rather uncomfortable kind of a way ; And though he was dead as any nail This sound was heard borne on the gale — " Up'ards.
