HOUSEBREAKING AT CAMBRIDGE.

A Native Arrested on Suspicion. Tiih business people of Cambridge were somewhat excited yesterday morning, when it became known in town that Ro&e's Masonic Hotel had been broken into dm ing the night, and that a sum of money had been extracted from the bar. About two or three o'clock in the morning, Mr Rose, hearing a suspicious noise issuing from the bar of his_ hotel, went downstairs, and on examining the premises, discovered that one of the front windows in the bar had been smashed; and on fiuther examination lie found that the change which he had left in the bar overnight had disappeaied. The missing money consisted of about £2 in silver, among which was a large proportion of threepenny-pieces, and some coppers. Mr Rose at once communicated the circumstance to Constable Breunan, who immediately set to work to catch the burglar. When the business houses opened, the constable visited the shop of Mr Kincaid, and learned from that gentleman that a native named Te Rakatu, who had no money on the previous evening, had been in with him and paid a bill ; and, returning at intervals, had changed several threepenny-pieces lor larger coin. After some search Constable Brennan succeeded in arresting Te Rakatu, whom he locked up. The burglar, it appears, broke the pane of glass in endervouring to cut it out, and having done so unfastened the catch, and raising the window, entered the bar barefoot. In crossing the counter he left a footprint on the top, and another on. a stool which was standing behind. The constable measured the footprints, and on measuring the foot of the native whom he arrested, found both ' were exactly the same size. The native will be brought before the ! Court this mornfng, and remanded.
