GOLD DISCOVERY NEAR TA UPO.
A gentleman* whose name we have been requested to withhold, and who has for some time past been aware of the presence of alluvial gold in the Taupo or Tuhua country, is aft present negotiating with the Government by way of ascertaining what support they are willing to lend in securing and working the new discovery. The gentleman to whom we refer has been prospecting with the natives for several months past, and we have every reason to believe his expedition has not been fruitless, but, instead, has been attended with great success. As the ownership of the land upon which the discovery has been made has not as yet been decided, the native claims being now before the Land Court at Cambridge, nothing can be done at present, but those natives who are at present on the land, and whose claims are now being heard, have expressed themselves greatly in favour of the country being opened, and having the new finds worked as soon as their titles to the land are fixed. It is expected however, that nothing will be done for about two years.
