Dog Tax.
No little amount of anger has been exhibited by the Mivoris here at the action qf . the, J£arioiiHighway' District Board in threatening to take legal proceedings to compel them to pay the dog tax. It is, of course, but right that owners of dogs amongst them should be made to do so as well as their European neighbours. One of the principal benefits derived from the enforcement of the "Dog Registration Act, 1881," is the fact that it tends^to lessen the'number of dangerous and useless dogs which 'might otherwise be allowed to run at large, but which their owners now destroy sooner than pay a tax for them. However, while Maori dogs ate left'untaxed the good thus arising from the act is obviated, and, it is gratifying to know that the district board spokeirof intend* tbenforce* its payment amongst ,the, ' Maori pppalation within tfieir junsdiction~. a success* the weather unfortunately did not prove propitious, and I am sorry to say that the attendance was so small as to vender the aftaiir being deemed a failure. The refreshments provided were excellent, and it is a pity that the committee were not rewarded with a better termination to their labours.
