Defensive Works Taken at the Point of the Bayonet,— Two Thousand of the Enemy Killed, and Several Thousand Taken Prisoners.—The Highlanders First to Enter the Entrenchments. Alexandria, September 13. Later particulars to hand prove that the British attack upon the enemy's position at Tel-el-Kebir was brilliantly conducted, The Highlanders were first to enter the entrenchments. The defeat inflicted upon the enemy has been most crushing, and it is now most improbable that auy great opposition will be shown by Arabi to the projected British advance on Cairo. Alexandria, Sept. ]3, (evening.) Intelligence now to hand shows that the British victory at Tel-el-Kebir has been complete. A very heavy loss has been inflicted upon the enemy, their casualties being reckoned at fully two thousand killed and wounded. The British loss is stated to be two hundred, including several officers, killed and wounded. The regiments forming the Highland Brigade bore the brunt of the action, and, fought splendidly. Arabi's troops are reported to be utterly demoralised. His infantry arc now flying in the direction of the desert, and a considerable force of British cavalry is in pursuit.
[abgus specials.] London, September 12, 17 p.m. In the engagement at Tel-el-Kebir the artillery opened a heavy fire from a sheltered position before the enemy were aware of an advance of the infantry. The British troops were within a mile from Tel-el-Kebir when their advance was discovered by the Egyptians, who at once commenced a heavy rifle fire. The Briti&h reserved their fire, and carried the defensive works at the point of the bayonet after a tremendous slaughter of the enemy, who are now in full retreat towards the south, pursued by the Highlanders and Indian troops. The retreat north was blocked up. Thousands of the enemy were taken pris6ners, and an immense quantity of stores were captured.
