A BOROUGH v. TOWN DISTRICTS.
♦ to' the editor Sir.— "The bridge is free." Joyful 1 Dews this is to all of us who live in the borough, and have felt the tax so severely during the last year or two. And now it behoves us to think of what is to come. It is well known that the borough was only formed for the purpose of building a bridge, and now that the said bridge is free, the necessity for the corporation ceases ;at least so think many of us. It has often been said that it would be a good thing if we could go back to the old highway board style, but that would be rather too much retrogression. My advice is that we form two town districts, one on either side of the river, and then surely all bickerings and disagreements will cease, and we shall be a happy, contented community. Another thing that requires looking into is tkis : The drainage system just proposed, and for which plans are now being made, will not equally affect both sides. The West side raises considerably more rates than the East, and at the same time the drainage works are going to cost a good deal more on the East side than on the West. It will be about in this proportion : — Of the special drainage rate the West raises 60 per cent, East 40. East drainage costs 60 per cent, West 40. Think this well over, and see if it is not better for the West to go in for separation at once. Form two town districts, and save a lot of the expenses attached to running a borough. Al license fees are payable to town districts same as to borough, so no loss would accrue in that way. I shall have more to say by-and-bye, meantime I hope to see the subject ventilatpd. — I am, &c, Tempora Mutautuk. Hamilton, Sept. 11, 1882.
