FOOTBALL.

The football match, New South Wales v. Auckland, eventuated on Saturday, and to the surprise of nearly everyone, resulted in an unmistakable victory for the home team, by one goal and one try to nil. Ryan also kicked a magnificent foal from the field, but unfortunately the all had been off-side just before he got hold of it, and had to be brought back ; all the same the kick was splendid. The New South Welshmen, candidly acknowledged that they were overmatched, and were quite astonished at finding so good a team here, but they hope to retrieve their laurels on their return journey. They played a different game from that usually seen, playing only six men forward, which gave the Aucklanders a great advantage, their forwards playing splendidly. Ryan played well for Auckland, as also Wood, Whiteside, Sibbin, Webster, Simms, Warbriok, and Biggs (who took Ring's place), the latter getting the first touch-down. For New South Wales, Raper (the captain), Walker, Bayless, Mann, and others played up well, but all through Auckland had slightly the best of it, and won by a goal -and a try — 7 points to nil. They play a return match on their way back to •Sydney in about a month's time.
