THE PROPOSED TRAMWAY TO TE AROILA.
At the usual monthly meeting of the Piako County' Council, held at Cambridge on Friday last, the following leport was received from the engineer, Mr James Stewart, on the proposed tramway at Te Aroha :—: — Auckland, 23rd August, ISS2. !
Tins Chairman Piako County Council. Sik, —Although I stated verbally to Mr Firth, the chairman of the sub committee of your council, on the position of matters relating thereto, I think it is right to send to yon for the information of the council, the following brief report :—: — The work of surveying has proved most tedious, owing in part to inclemency of the weather, but mostly caused by the exceeding difficulty of the country. The side slopes are so steep in places that a very small variation in position affects the works heavily ; and the lines have to be gone over repeatedly in order to get the best position. I regret that the gradient I reported as likely to be got on the main line is not to be obtained. In checking the levels an error was discovered, which reduces the gradient to lin 30. This is still a fair workable gradient, seeing the traffic is all down hill ; but the configuration of the country renders the arranging of proper level portions for terminals and junctions of the self-acting inclines, a work of much trouble. I have, however, I believe, got fair arrangements made for all of these. I have schemed all the curves and alignments of main line and self-acting inclines. Mr Purchas is laying out the lines and staking out. Mr Crump is levelling, and I hope in about ton days to receive the first of the plans. Tenders will bu called for as soon as possible, on conditions which will allow of the most ample improvements being effected during the works. I will call for tenders for freight of rails to the landing at Wairongomai at once. They are ready for delivery to us.—l have the honor to be, Sir, yoiir most obedient servant, James Stewart. In accordance with an application accompanying above report the council agreed on the motion of Cr. Campbell "That £200 be forwarded to Mr Stewart as an imprest supply for the work. "-—The clerk was further instructed to wire to Mr J. B. Whyte, M.H.R., asking him when the sum of £0000, proposed to be granted towards the construction of the tramway, is likely to be available.
