MANGAPIKO HIGHWAY DISTRICT. Annual Meeting.

The annual meeting of the ratepayers of the above district was held on Saturday, July 22nd. The meeting was very quiet and formal, all proceedings being concluded in an hour. Mr Richard Bosanko, who was voted to the chair, opened the meeting by reading the advertisement convening the meeting from The Waihato Timn, The following statement of accounts was read and adopted : — Receipts : Balance, July Ist, 1882, £268 17s 7d ; rates collected, £201 Is 2cl ; subsidies, £198 8s lOd ; sales, £9 8s 9d ; survey refund, £3 3s : total, £683 19s 4d. Expenditure : Bridges and culverts, £50 os 2d ; repairs and improvements, £319 18s lid; material purchased, £157 Is Id; land purchased, £20 ; surveyor, £25 17s ; valuer, £12 12s ; secretary, £12 12s ; commission, £10 3s ; printing and advertising, £11 17s 6d ; legal expenses, £11 9s 4d ; stamps and stationery, £6 2s 6d ; miscellaneous, £13 2s 6d ; balance, £32 18s 4d : total, £683 19s 4d. The old board were requested to re-enter office, but refused. The following ratepayers were then nominated : — F. C. Germann, W. Hume, A. Gregory, E. Robinson, and J. Blain. No others being proposed, these were declared elected. Messrs Macky and Trobe were elected auditors, and Messrs Meredith and Munro fence- viewers. As a recommendation to the new board, Mr Roche moved and Mr Macky seconded that the rate be 9d in the £.— As an amendment, Mr J. H. Scott proposed and Mr Robinson seconded that the rate be Is in the £. — On a show of hands being taken, the motion was carried. A conversation sprang up as to the present price of beef from a farmer's point of view, and ways and means of improving matters, but in view of the proposed meeting at Ohaupo it did not get beyond the conversational stage. A vote of thanks to the chair terminated the proceedings.
