THE SPARROW NUISANCE.

At yesterday's meeting of the Waikato County Council, the chaivnlan*(Captain Steele) drew attention to the small bird pest. He was of opinion that some stringent measures ought to be taken with a view to lessening the evil, and with that object thought the various highway boards in the county should be communicated with, asking them to empower the council to make the necessary representation to their member, urging him to support any measure aiming at the removal of the nuisance. If the local bodies had the power of levying a rate for the purpose, much good might be done, as the amount required would be small. Cr Wells quite coincided with the chairman, but thought the council, as the representative body, should lose no time in communicating with Mr Whyte, writing to the other local bodies in the meantime. Mr Wells' suggestion was agreed to.
