The usual monthly meeting of the couucil was held at the chambers yesterday. Present : — Capt Steele (chairman), Crs. Wells, Hewitt, Graham, and Primrose. He said the calculation had been made from the Ist April, 1881, to the present, and the revenue aocuring from publicans' licenses had been credited to the town board, and that arising out of butchers' license to the country board. The result showed a balance to the credit of the whole riding of £87 12s sd, divided as follows :— Town, £2 10s 3d ; country, £72 Is2d; Taotaoroa, £13 Is Id.— Cr. Wells said if the vote for the Karapiro bridge were taken out of the town account there would be a large credit. Neither the country district of Cam? bridge Jior Taotaoroa had contributed anything to this work- yet as arranged. — Cr. Primrose said the vote of £450 had been granted by the council on the assumption that it would be recouped by the revenue out of publicans' licenses, -which. source of revenue had nW, been cufoff by the town district of* 'Cambridge;— After'some further- discus- , 'sibnit^as agreed toplbs|pone % the'_disc3i3siott ofthi? matter until uexti meeting,-- j
Cr. Primrose gave 'notice to oioye at the next meeting that the Cambridge riding be divided, so as to erect the town district into a separate riding, to return one member, the other riding-returning two members.— Cr., Wells urged Cr. Primrose to reconsider the matter as he would only put the country to great expense for no practical purpose. Their member had promised to do his utmost with a view to getting an amendment inserted in the Town Districts Act to exclude town districts from the counties, and they might wait to see what effect this action would have. — Cr. Primrose said his motion would not in any case do harm, as in the interests of the county and riding it would be better for- the latter to be divided. This was all the business.
