THE ARMED CONSTABULARY TO GO INTO WINTER QUARTERS.

The very inclement state of the weather for some time past having made it almost impossible for the constabulary to make any material pi ogress with the Rotorua road, it has been deemed advisable by the officers to retire to Cambridge dining the remaining months of wet weather. Notwithstanding the difficulties with which the men had to contend, some good work lias been done during their stay, and the road through the bush has been fairly entered upon. Latterly, however, life under canvas has not been of the pleasantest, and sickness was beginning to make its appearance. The Bth Division, of 50 men, will arrive in Cambridge this afternoon, the other divisions following on Wednesday and Thursday. Fifteen men will proceed to Alexandra, and about ten to Kihikihi. Already preparations are being made to make tlio men as comfortable as possible in their winter quarters. The camp will be in the Government paddock adjoining the barracks, and, as usual, the men will be under canvass, the two barrackrooms to be used as mess-rooms. Mr T. Wells, the ration contractor, has already commenced the erection of a spacious canteen for the accomodation of the men. The works upon which the men are to be put during the few months of their stay in their winter quarters have not as yet been indicated, but we learn that the Cambridge Town Board have already been making representations to the proper authorities to have the work in conneefcidn with the Karapiro bridge done by constabulary labour. This will undoubtedly be a great saving to the board if their application is acceded to, but pro--bal>ly the, Government will then want a re-fund of their grant-in-aid of the work. There are other works in the vicinity of Cambridge to which the men might be put. There are several unformed streets in the township,-which are at present any thing but '-comfortably > passable,* among which we might particularise Chapel-street, the lower part of Victoria*" streetj Alpha-street; and the 'Hamilton road between the Town Belt'and'Vic-' &>ria-stree£ - VPerhaps the town board, 1 will sea ,the' necessity of calling a special meeting > J-'foi^'the"' rc6risideration of the -matter." ,' '?~\ <t,V.-A M . .''
