SHOCKING TRAGEDY IN CHAPEL-STREET, AUCKLAND. [BY TELEGRAPH. — OWN CORRESPONDENT.]
- Auckland, Last Night. Considerable excitement was caused this morning by a shocking tragedy enacted in one of the houses in Chapel-street. The tenement in question was occupied by a newly married couple, named Foreman, and shortly after eight o'clock, to-day, the wife was observed to rush out of the house, and immediately afterwards a gunshot was heard. Soon afterwards it was discovered that Foreman, the husband, had shot himself through the heart with a carbine, and that death had been instantaneous. Deceased was ayoung man named Henry Foreman, aged 22 yens, and has been employed for some time past at the Auckland Timber Company's mill. He was married only six weeks to-day, to Mary Heading, a girl of IS years of age, with whom he had been keeping company for some time previously. She is a daughter of Heading, of the wharf turncock, who resides in Durham - street. The match was not a happy one, and it would seem from all accounts that the youthful pair were almost constantly quarrelling. Relations became less happy every day, and it is said that on several occasions he threatened to ' ' do for" his wife. He was a member of the Naval Brigade, and kept his carbine constantly loaded in the house. Mrs Foreman alleges that on one occasion he took down the weapon and threatened to shoot her and then put a bullet through his own body. Within the last week the couple have been quarrelling veiy frequently. Last night lie saw her gossiping with a young man, and struck her this inotniug. They had a quarrel about money. He took down the gun to shoot her ; she ran away and he shot himself.
