. ,-fr. The contractors foy the Tamahere sec- \ tion of the Cambridge railway (Messrs Mercer and Marshall) formally commenced operations, on Thursday. The contractors, accompanied by His Worship the Mayor of Hamilton, and a number of gentlemen proceeded to the junction of the Cambridge with the Thames line near Capt. Runeiman's, Marsh Meadows Estate. On arrival, the Mayor of Hamilton, at the request of the contractors, proceeded to turn the first sod, amid the cheers of those present. This task having been satisfactorily completed, the party partook of an excellent luncheon provided by Mr J. S. Milne, of the Commercial Hotel, Hamilton. A good account having been given of the edibles, • His Worship the Mayor, asked the company to charge their glasses to drink "Success to the Cambridge Railway." He congratulated the district that so useful a work had at last been commeuced, a work which would tend in the surest way to cement the tiesef relationship between the two most important centres "of population in Waikato. He thought that the promptitude displayed by the contractors in the commencement of their work, no less than the excellent character with which they came amongst them, augured well, not only for the speedy completion of the line, but also for the quality of the work. (Applause.) Mr Marshall, on behalf of himself and partners,' returned thanks for the kind manner in which the Mayor had referred to them. They might rest assured that the 1 contractors would do their utmost to prove worthy of the compliment.
