THE THAMES- WA IK A TO RAILWAY.
Ixtimatiox has been received by the Mayor of the Thames from the Premier that tenders for the construction of the Shortknd section of the Thames-Waikato railway will be invited at once. Referring to this intelligence the Thames Star says: — "We are disposed to think Mr Whitaker will deal very liberally with the Thames district, and his colleagnos will not be able to call in question his knowledge of its requirements, but be all the more ready to support his views. The unfavorable impressions for years held by many Southern men of the importance of the Upper Thames district appear to have been quite dispelled when a more intimate knowledge has been obtained of the country by a personal inspection. The late Premier, Mr Hall, admitted that he was not at all aware that the district was like what it really is, and Mr Rolleston has repeatedly shown of late that he exhibits a good opinion of the future of the Thames district. Under such circumstances, it shall not surprise us if this long neglected part of the Island receives considerable attention at the hands of the Whitaker Cabinet."
