PI A KO CO UNTY CO UNCIL.

The usual monthly meeting of the above council was held at the Council Chambers, Lake-street, Cambridge, on Friday evening last. There were present : Coim cillors R. H. D. Fergusson (chairman), W. T. Firth, H. E. Whitaker, W. P. Chepmell, W. L. C. Williams, K. Maclean, J. C. Firth. — The cleik was instructed to wire to Mr Benzoni, informing him that since agreeing to take the sleepers from the Got eminent stock at Paeroa the council had decided to have thorn cut at Te Aroha, it having been ascertained that the cost would be much less. The following resolutions wore adopted: — Proposed by Ci\ J. C. Firth "That, -firstly. Messrs Jas. Stuart and Alcx^ 'AHtkiri 'be requested to report in conjunction with the county engineer upon the best line. for a main tramway at Te Aroha, together with the best system of connecting branch tramways (either wire or otherwise), with the main line, and the probable cost thereof. Secondly. That Crs. J. C. Firth and Whitakor be a committee for the purpose of giving the engineer the necessary instructions and as to the remuneration." — Carried. — Proposed by Cr. H. E. Whitaker " That the necessary steps be taken for the purpose of striking a late of one shilling in the £ upon all rateable property in the outlying distiict of Te Aroha." — Carried. — Proposed by Cr. Fergu&son " That the council respectfully draw the attention of the Government to the condition of that portion of the main Cambridge-Taupo road (formed by the constabulary) lyins; between the junction at Morris's farm about four and a half lniles trom Cambridge, and the Waotu. The road itself in places being almost impassable, many land slips having occurred during the last two years, the Pieri bridge is m a rotten and decayed condition and veiy dangerous, and the approaches to the new Waipa bridge have also fallen into a very unsafe condition." — Carried. — Proposed by Cr. J. C Firtli "That Mr Bremner be ap-' pointed rate collector for the Te Aroha outlying district, at a commission of 4 per cent upon all ratescollected." — Carried. — Proposed by Cr. Chepmell " That Mr Purchase be appointed county engineer upon the terms expressed in his letter of the 3rd inst." — Carried. — Proposed byCr. H. E. Whitaker " That the chairman of the Coromandel county be requested to furnish to this council further information re the proposed abolition of the tax upon mining property, shewing the class of property affected ■by the said tax, aud in what - manner - it bears jurdiously upon it." — Canned. — Proposed by Cr. H. E. Whitaker, "That the boundary between the Thames and Piako counties be properly defined by the county engineer, the expense not to exceed a moderate sum." Carried. — Proposed by Cr. J. C. Firth, "That the clerk write to Capt. Turner, thanking him for his suggestion re progress payments on the Tauranga road contract in the usual manner i.e., immediately the claim for such payment is passed by the council, which will be done at the first meeting of the council, held after receipt of the engineer'a certificate." Carried. — Proposed by Cr. Fergusson., " That the • claims of Messrs Chas. McLean (Nos. 2 and 3 contract) and John McCulloch (No. 7 contract) for work done be paid less the amount of fines incurred for non-fulfil-ment of contract within specifications, and that the letters from the contractors upon the subject be referred to the county engineer, and he be requested to report to the council as to what deduction, if any, should be made. The clerk also to write Messrs Farrell and Ensor, acknowledging receipt of their letter, ths consideration of which is deferred until completion of contract." Carried. — Proposed by Cr, J. C. Firth, " That the money (-£1) received from Mr Brown on account of a conditional license granted him by the Licensing Committee of the Waitoa district be returned to him, it not having been received until the Sth April, and the matter being then in the hands of the police. Carried.— Proposed by Cr. J. C. Firth, "That the clerk write to the Government, questing them to appoint Mr. Graham clerk to the Waitoa Licensing District, in lieu of Mr Thos. Kirk, the present clerk.— Carried. I—Proposed1 — Proposed by Cr. H. E. Whitaker "That permission be granted Messrs. A. and G. Price, Thames, to erect posts "upon" the banks of the Waihou river, subject to the approval of the ranger. — Carried. — Proposed by Cr. H. E. Whitaker, " That the necessary steps be taken forthwith to have the punt at Te Aroha gazetted as a public punt. The pipit is situated where the main coach road crosses the Waihou river near the TeAroha .township." — Carried. — The follow ing accounts were passed for payment : — H. W.
