ACCIDENT ON THE RAILWAY.

«> We received the following telegram from Pukekohe yesterday afternoon :— " The Waikato train was thrown off the line by oafctle two miles from here on the Auckland sule. The engine aud several trucks are off the line, and a horse box containing a horse and two mares, was thrown light down the embankment. The men escaped. The horse is still in the box. but is much injured. The train Avill probably be delayed some hours. It was a narrow escape. The line is much damaged, the rails bent double, and the sleepers smashed." Later particulars disclose that the accident happened when the train was passing through Mr. Jameson's land, some cattle belonging to that settler having got on the line, which here, as at most other place?, is uufenced. The cowcatcher caught one of the' animals, but by some means it got under the wheels of the engine, and was soon crushed to a jelly. The engine and six tracks and a horse box, which contained Mr MeKinnou's racehorse Gilderoy, were thrown off the line, the trucks bong considerably damaged. The accident took place at about 10. 15 a.m., and it was aftei 3 p.m. before the line was cleared. The north train proceeded on to i Pukekohe and returned with the passengers south, reaching Hamilton at about 7.30. p.m., while a special engine from Auckland took the carnages of the damaged train back to, town. Fortunately, no injury was*done to human life or limb, a circumstance which is most fortunate as not my far from the scene of the mishap is a bridge over a pretty deep cieek. The damage done amounts to seveial hundied pounds. The necessity of fencing the railway is daily becoming more apparent. The Waikato train had to stop again on it way heie last night to allow cattle to get off the line, and one of the lady passengers was so frightened that' she jumped off the train while it was in motion. We trust the authouties will seriously .consider the matter,
