The Volunteer Citmmissiouers continue to receive Luge numbers of applications for grants of land. The commissioners will sit at the Thames on or about the 11th April. The lowest tender received by Messrs Keals for the erection of a house and stable near Cambridge is Hendersons — £946 for the dwelling, and £35 for the stables. < - * Captain Matheson, so seriously injured on the Three Cheers, schooner, died last night. , Very little business has been d jfcrg^in the sharemarkeb during the last wjsek, but to-day there was demand for Te Aroha stock, while inquiry was also made for Waihi shares.- The battery at the latter place will be ready for- work before the end of April. > Stevenson's store, Onehunga, caught fire this morning. The flames were extinguished before serious damage was done. , Scarlet fever appears to be dying out in the city and suburbs at last. There are eight cases of typhoid fever under treatment in the hospital. Capt. Webster, of the Albion, was married to Miss Quick, at the, North Shore, today. The Minister of Education wrote Home by yesterday's mail for two professors for the pioposed Auckland College, to arrive here next January. News from Russell sfrites that Sidney Taiwhanga wants the natives to send him Home as a deputation to the Queen about breaches of the Waitangi treaty.
