THE KARAPIRO BRIDGE AND ROAD.
At the meeting of the Cambridge Town Boaixl on Tuesday, Mr Kirkwood asked the chairman if he was in possession of any information relative to the construction of the Karapiro bridge. He would like very much that the board should express an opinion on the matter as to the desirability of the Government proceeding with the work without any further delay, because the work of fencing iv tue dangerous portion of the road could not be proceeded Avith until the levels had been taken. He thought the chairman should be requested to write to Mr Hales, District Engineer, on the matter, also to the member for the district, Mr Whyte, and sco what was going to be done. — Mr Gwynneth, engineer to the board, said he did not hold himself responsible for the Karapiro Bridge, as it was likely to go to pieces at any time. The nails driven in recently would not hold the planks down. He therefore thought it his duty to mention this circumstance to the board lest if anything should happen he should be blamed for it. — The chairman remarked that the board had had a letter from Mr Hales, saying the bridge would stand for a considerable time to come. — On the motion of Mr Kirkwood, it was then agreed that Mr Hales be communicated with ; also the member for the district, urging upon them the immediate necessity of the work.
