SPORTING Waikato Turf Club Summer Meeting.
The new steeplechase course at the Ohaupo race ground is finished, and "seems to be first-class. We inspected the various jumps and found them to be as follows : — Leaving the stand, the first obstacle is a post and rail fence, filled and topped with brush ; then comes a stone wall, well and strongly built. Next there are two water jumps, none of your amateur ditches filled with a few pails of water, but running creeks. Then comes a stiff bank and double ditch, with wattling on the bank, followed' by a 3ftr ditch and two rails. " A rasping three-rail fence comes next, then a milder one with two rails and a flight of hurdles to finish up with in the run home. The horses will only be on the flat course in the run home, the rest' of the Steeplechase being outside the usual running ground. The whole affair has been superintended by Mr Saml. Steele, which is sufficient guarantee that the jumps have been well selected. The following general entries and acceptances were received last night : —
