LATEST INTERPROVINCIAL [BY TELEGRAPH.]

Thames, Last Night. The Thames telegraph wire is now stretched from the local office to Phillips' store, Paeroa, and in a very short time direct communication will be established between the Thames and Ohinemuri. In the case of Comes v. the Jockey Club Stewards, claiming £24 10s, for wrongful payment of totalisator stakes, Mr Kenrick gave judgment this morning. He held that transactions with the totalisator constituted betting and gaming according to the Act, and any shares could not be recovered in a Court of law. He therefore nonsuited the plaintiff. In giving judgment he said that in the absence of any recognised rule for the disposal of totalisator stakes he recognised the law of betting, and in awarding the money the winning horse must be considered. The owners of machines could work accordingly, provided such regulations were posted up for the information of investors.

Timaru, Last Night. John Thomas Healey, a very old resident, has been committed for trial at the Supreme, Court, on three charges of forging and littering bills and cheques. Defence was reserved.
