Otra correspondent wires, last night : — The s.s. Hero has arrived from Sydney. Mr Fantham and family, late of Waikato, left for Waitara yesterday. The Union Company are sending 'home by every English vessel large quantities of kauri gum, intended for deck planking of new boats at present building. During the past year the city valuer reports 228 new buildings erected in the city, exclusive of additions to existing buildings. Mr Gamble has received information by cable that the City of Sydney sailed from San Francisco on the 16th inst. instead of the 24th, time table date. She may be expected here on Monday, February 6th. White has again been defeated by Carter at' Mercury Bay. Carter and White, on this occasion, exchanged boats, as the latter was of opinion' that his opponent's previous-victory was more due to the boat , he pulled in than to his rowing powers. The Board of Health has directed Mr Brophy, the quarantine superintendent, that the Zealandia's passengers now at Motuih; be released , to-morrow morning should no fresh cases of sickness have broken out ' recently.
