A USTRALIAN NEWS. [REUTERS TELEGRAMS.]
Melbourne, January 5. Information has been received that Her Majesty's ships Diamond and Espiegle will shortly relieve the Emerald and Cormorant on the Australian station. An unsuccessful attempt was made last night to fire the ship Oasis, lying at Sandridge Pier. A quantity of shavings saturated with resin and kerosene was found to be on fire, but was extinguished without any damage being done. The carpenter of the ship is stated to be implicated in the attempt. January 6. The Orient s.s. Garonne has arrived here and has been quarantined. She has 43 passengers for New Zealand ports. It is uncertain whether she will remain here or go on to Sydney as usual.
