LATEST NATIVE NEWS. (BY TELEGRAPH.)
Pungarehu, last night.— Two hundred men went out yesterday and destroyed about 250 acres of Maori crop. About the same number have gone out again this morning. It is stated here that Government have confiscated 60,000 acres of land as indemnity for cost of recent demonstration. — Christmas was chiefly celebrated here by all men having a holiday. Many of the tents were decorated and at night illuminated. They presented a very pleasing effect. The men behaved themselves well ; not a single case of insubordination or drunkenness having been reported.
Waitara.— Te Wetere, of Mokau, and a large number of followers have arrived here and held a meeting relative to the holding of a Land Court at Mokau, applications for which were sent to Government several months ago, but no attention was paid. The natives desire to open the trade between Mokau aud Auckland, and they have concluded to memorialise the coming Parliament respecting their applications.
