TAUPIRI.
The settlers are very pleased indeed with the prospect of getting a station and Telegraph Office here, and are never done thanking our representative, Mr J. B. Whyte, for his untiring efforts to secure us such. — The bridge across the Komakorau about four miles from here is in course of construction, and will be finished in about a month. I see there are tenders called for No. 2 bridge across the Konmakorau which will be built near the Taupiri and Hukunui roads, and about a quarter of a mile from the Railway Station, and will be the means of opening up a very large extent of country. The latter bridge mentioned is the one Mr J. B. Whyte was successful in obtaining a grant of £250 from the Government towards its construction. — Mr Coombes is getting on remarkably well with his contract for gravelling between here and Woodlands, and when completed will be a great boon to the settlers, and more especially to the Waikato Land Association, whose waggons are almost constantly on the road.— There is no doubt before long the County Council or Government will see their way clear to erect a bridge across Maungawhare Creek at a distance of say about nine miles from here abutting on to Messrs Hill and Dilworth's estate on the north, and Mr Welsh's farm on the south side of the Creek, if a bridge were built where I have mentioned, it would open up tens of thousands of acres of good land, which at present no one can see his way clear to occupy.— (Own Correspondent, Dec. 28.)
Kerosine oil poured on the nests of caterpillars till thoroughly saturated will destroy them. Recently a farmer, living at Swingle Station, Yolo country, turned a herd of fat beef cattle into a field of green fodder corn, and in a short time forty of the animals died, apparently from inflammation. A drove of hogs were given the diseased carcasses to feed upon, and forty-five of them were fatally poisoned.
