LATEST WELLINGTON NEWS. (PER TELEGRAPH.)
Our correspondent wires the following last night :—: — ' The Hon. Mr Bryce leaves for Parihak«a, and will probably leave for Opunake to-night en route for Wanganui, where he will spend the holidays. A slight shock of earthquake was felt here at 7 o'clock this morning. Ministers have recently been in communication with the Agent-General on the question of direct steam communication between Great Britain and New Zealand. Sir F. Dillon Bell has been consulting with English and Scottish shipping firms, and it is expected will shortly furnish Government with a full report on the subject. The Hon. H. Pharazyn, M.L.0., was to-day committed from the Resident Magistrate's Court to take his trial before the Supreme Court for plural voting at the Thorndon election : bail being allowed in his own recognizance of £500. The case excited great interest, the Court being crowded.
