THE LOTTERIES ACT SCANDAL. (PER TELEGRAPH.)

A Pre^s Association wire, dated from Wellington last night, reports :— At the Resident Magistrate's Court to-day, Sir \V. Fiteherberfc, the Hon. John Martin, and two other gentlemen were fined £10 for a breach of the Gaming and Lotteries Act by taking part in a sweepstakes on the Hutt racecourse on the 30th ult. All four gave notice of appeal. In another action against six gentlemen on similar charges, five were discharged, owing to sufficient e\idence, and the sixth was fined 40s, he having admitted to the detective that he had taken .part in the st\ eep.
