LATEST AUCKLAND NEWS. [BY TELEGRAPH— OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Auckland, Last Night.

The bazaar in connection with the Roman Catholic Church, St Benedict, Newton, was opened to-day. The result of competition for open scholarships was announced at the meeting of the Board Education this afternoon as follows :— Louisa Durrin, 856 marks ; Cyrie Biss, 855 marks ; Hy. E. Kernphorne, 817 marks : Alexander Morrison, 775 marks. A large number of business men at Cambridge being desirous of getting gas introduced into their town, communicated with the Auckland Gas Company- with a view to secure the advice and assistance of Mr Atkinson, the engineer. The directors returned a favorable reply. Mr Atkinson will proceed 'at once to make an examination and give the Cambridge folk all the assistance in* his power. An alarming sensation has been caused at Coromandel by thonon arrival of .the steamer Coromandelj which left AxLck.-

land at two o'clock yesterday. Several tragic reports are in ' circulation. Mr Golclio of Auckland, riding from Whangapoua last night saw from a high hill what appeared to be a great volume of steam issuing from the gulf ; another party saw a great bubling up, and another heard a loud explosion. The solution of the mystery, no doubt, iB that owing to the big sea rolling down the passage the steamer is lying in Waiheke.
