Wellinqtow, Last Night. The police authorities have definitely decided to take action against the gentlemen who were engaged ia sweeps at the Hufct races. The cases will be heard in a day or two. The Governor, Lady Gordon, and family, leave for Lyttleton by the Hinemoa at eight o'clock to-night, and are expected to be absent about eight or ten days. Three judges of the Supreme Court will meet in a few days to draw up regulations under tbe Election Petitions Act. This step is being rendered necessary, as it is understood that several petitions in connection with the recent elections will be presented.
Later. It is expected that the erection of the new Post-office and Telegraph-office will ,be commenced early in February. ' The criminal session of the Supreme Court open on the 3rd January. Only five cases as yet are set down for hearing, one of a serious nature. This Afternoon informations under the Gaming and Lotteries' Act were laid against some eight gentlemen who were engaged in sweeps on the' Hutt racecourse on the 30th> ult. Herald, vras brought before the magistrate this morning on, a criminal information charging him with having forged the name of Mr Jones,, solicitor, to five telegrams. Jones was chairman of W^ston'tC election committee^ and it is alleged that defendant, on the polling day, presented for transmission five telegrams purportiug'to be signed by Jones, and addressed to Weston's principal supporters at Brunnerton, saying that Weston's return.was impossible, and asking , the receivers to do their best for McLean, the opposing candidate. After hearing the evidence for the prosecution, defendant was committed for trial at the next sitting of the District Court^ bail' being allowed. The Christchurch and Greymouth railway commission arrived here last nigh'tj and are gathering information upon the coal, timber, and laud resources of Inangahua.
Christchurch, Last Night. The New Zealand Company's ship Waimate arrived on Saturday evening from London after a passage of 91 days. She brings 68 passengers, a Clydesdale entire, a trotting entire, six Leicester cheep, and other stock. She experienced remarkably fine weather during the passage. On Saturday, a man named Radcliffe, while out shooting, was dangerously shot in the body by the accidental discharge of his gun. The champion prize for the most points in the recent anniversary sports, was awarded to T. Woods, of Wellington. Thirty-four cricketers have been selected for the match with the English eleven.
