LATEST AUCKLAND NEWS. [BY TELEGRAPH— OWN CORRESPONDENT.] The English Cricketers. Auckland, Last Night.
It is now certain that the English cricketing team will visit Auckland at the end of January or the beginning of February next year. The terms asked by the Canterbury Cricket Association were so high that doubts were freely expressed regarding the probability of New Zealand being included in the tour. This uncertainty has been set at rest by an arrangement for a three days' match against the cricketers of the cathedral city.
The Stranding of the Ship MayQueen. Messrs Oruickshank and Co., agents for the ship May Queen, received the following telegram from the captain at Tauranga to-day :—": — " May Queen floated off with this morning's tide. The Staffa arrives this afternoon, and will tow her up. The place where the vessel grounded is all sand, and she will probably have sustained no damage whatever by the mishap." Volunteers will be rejoiced to learn that the Government have determined to pay a capitation fee of £2 per man this year for all who have attended the requisite number of parades, instead of the paltry £1 allowed last year. Intimation to this effect has reached head-quarters at Auckland, and in due course will be formally announced. News from Ohinemutu states Mr Graham's man (Turner) ascended Tongariro last Wednesday. He had to remain there all night, and nearly perished with cold. The crater is active, and the geyser throwing streams of mud 500 feet high. The sight was grand and terrifying.
