Mr Theo. Coopkr, lawyer, is a candidate for City West. The Heio has arrived from Sydney. About twelve men interviewed Major Withers to day in response to an advertisement calling for recruits for the Armed Constabulary force. None of these were engaged, as certaiu forms have to be gone through before they can bo taken in the Government service. In addition, a number of men applied earlier in the day, but did not wait until Major Withers arrived, and consequently did not see him.
The Government will shortly publish a new tariff of railway charges. It is understood that reductions will be made for the conveyance of stock aud other articles. A sharp shock of earthquake was felt at Masterton and Castle Point at 7.58 last night. The direction was N. W. to S.E. From and after the first of November, Post-office money orders will be issued on the 'German States, and on the first of January next a system on the exchange of money orders between the United States and this colony will be established.
