MR HALCOMBE AND THE PATETERE COUNTRY.

Negotiation's have now been completed between Mr Halcombe and the Patetere Land Association, and consequently the settlement of the land may be looked forward to at no distant period. The entire 200,000 acres has been transferred to the above gentleman as the representative of the Emigration Aid Society of England, on whose behalf negotiations have been entered into, and already tenders have been invited for the ploughing and levelling of 1000 acres, at a distance of about 29 miles from Cambridge, or eight miles from Oxford. This part of the block which is to be ploughed is intended for a township, and will be surveyed into allotments for building purposes. It is intended to erect a saw-mill at the nearest timber ground, so that settler? may have a plentiful, as well as a cheap supply of this indispensable material to facilitate the work of settlement. Perhaps the most commendable feature in the settlement of this land is that the Company have had plans drawn up for the erection of homesteads of different sizes, which they have given to Mr Halcombe, so that intending settlers may have cottages erected and thus enabled to leave the ship direct for their home.s. Mr Stewart has been engaged to survey the line for the projected railway between Rotorua and MovrmsviUe, and is at present in Ohinemutu engaged in the preliminary work.
