The House met at 2 30. The Speaker before proceeding announced that in accordance with the Standing Ordqrs 51 and 71, he would at 7.30 p.m. proceed with the Orders of the Day, whether or not the question then before the House was disposed of. He would strictly adhere to that rule in future, and regretted he had committed an error in not doing so on previous occasions. Mr Collins moved the adjournment of the House. Sir George Grey asked that the adjournment should be agreed to that they should be allowed till 7. 30 to consider the ruling laid down by the Speaker, alter which an opportunity should be given for debating that ruling. In reply to Mr Bryce, the Speaker said it was competent for members to discuss his ruling, and if possible show cause why it should not be acted upon. Mr Hursthouse announced his intention of finally severing his connection with the Government party. Sir G. Grey contended that the ruling laid down by the Speaker's ruling was unjustifiable. He did not intend to impute improper motives to the Speaker, but desired to prevent him being placed in a position which would countenance the impression that he was using his authority to coerce vthe House. Mr Sheehan announced his intention of assisting the Nelson members. Messrs Wakefield and Hall spoke in support of, and Mr Ballance against the Speaker's ruling
