PUBLIC HALL, HAMILTON. TO THE EDITOR.
SIX, — A short time since a paragraph appeared in your journal to the effect that the Government was going to place upon the Estimates the sum of £100 in aid of a Public Hall in Hamilton. JVlany of the burgesses and settlers of theso districts, to the number of 147, addressed a letter to the Colonial Secretary diawing hia attention to the fact of live halls being in the Borough, of Hamilton — two of them large ones, one at a cost of near £1400, the other at over £1500,— being used as public halls at a nominal rental, shewing him the fallacy of erecting another hall for public purposes, and praying that the proposed. £100 may be devoted to the purpose of establishing 1 a free public library, which amount the residents of this distiicfc would liberally supplement, as such an institution would be of the greatest moment to us, and for which purpose the Oddfellows would giant the use of their hall. The answer to which, and explanatory telegram in reply, I beg to enclose you for publication. By the former it it> shewn that no such intention ever existed as the Government aiding in the erection of another hall, or that they have altered their views in respect to such a proceeding. — I am, &c. Robt. Harris. Hamilton, 23rd August, 1881.
