Case of Smuggling. Wellington, Last Night.

Seven boxes of tobacco, each weighing about oOlbs., were discovered by Detective Benjamin this afternoon, planted under a dwelling house iv Frederickstreet. Walter Lee, on whose premises the tobacco was found, has been arrested, and will be charged with having unstamped boxes of tobacco in his possession. The police have been aware of the plant for some time, and have been watching the spot with a view to implicating others, but without success. Albion Gold Mining Company. Shares in the Albion Gold Mining Company (Terawhiti) have been m demand for the past few days, and large sales have been made at is Gd (9d paid up). Philosophical Society. At a meptmg of the Wellington Philosophical Society, a paper w,is read by Mr Skey, the Colonial Analysist, on the supposed parafin at Waiapu, in which he gave a less favourable a< count of the discovery than those which have previously appeared. He expressed his opinion that both Mr Dibon, of Sydney, and Mi Cosmo Newberry, of Melbourne, whose analysis have been published, had overlooked the presence of about 50 per cent, or valueless qxidis-ed hydro-carbou allied to doppliiite, and had included it in aparafin, thereby giving it an apparent value which it did not poises*, in consequence of which it was spoken of as a deposit of parafin.
