DRAMATIC PERFORMANCE AT ALEXANDRA.
♦ Tiik Alexandra Amateur Dramatic Club gave a very pleasant theatrical performance on Friday evening at the Alexandra Town Hall. The fittings of the stage and the scenery painted by Mr Pistrucci, of that place, were deservedly admired by all present. The programme included the i.irce of "Wooing in Jest," the old farce of "My Son Diana," and the wellknown old London play of " The Wandering Minstrel." The performance ot Miss Jenny Finch, as Mrs Witchington in the first piece, was pronounced charming. Mr McCabe, in the same piece, was much applauded as Thomas, the servant. In the amusing farce that followed, Captain Capel was very good as Captain Culpepper, and Mr Alfred Stewart as Diana, was equally amusing., Mr Chappell as the lover, and Mr Charlton as John, the servant, well deserved the applause they received. In the ' ' Wandering Minstrel" Mr Uharltou performed the part of the inimitable Joe Boggs most amusingly. Mr Chappell, in the part of Mrs Crinkham, was very good, though his voice had rather a masculine depth about it that might have hurt the feelings of respectable British females thinking they were listening to one ot their own sex. After the theatrical performance there was a dance, largely attended by the residents in the surrounding districts and town, and the pleasures of the evening were prolonged till a very advanced hour of the following morning.
The new pure cash system now being initiated by G. and C. will certainly prove a benefit to the public. It has 'been a. great success in Sydney and Melbourne and when strictly earned out the customer who buys at an establishment where the goods are marked low to ensure a rapid sale must be a groat gainer. G. and C. sell their drapery millinery, and clothing at such prices for cash as gives the buyer the advantages of a !>ha.reholder in a co-operative society, without the risk of being called upon to bearaportionofthelossshould the year's business prove unsatisfactory. Garlick and Cranwell will aim to retain the confidence which the public have hitherto shown them, and are determined to give the pure cash system a fair trial ; whether they gain or lose the first year. Country buyers on remitting cash with order will be supplied with goods at co-operative priced ; iust the same as though they made a personal selection. Furnishing- gqods, such as carpets, floor cloths, bedsteads, bed 'Su;p and gencrai house furniture, the largest portion of which is turned out at our.own.factoryi "will be marked at the lowest remunerative prices, and a discount of. five per cent, will be allowed to those who pay at the time of purchase. G. &C. having realised the entire value of their stock during their' late cash sale, the present stock is new and cheaply sought. An inspection is invited. — Garlick and CRAN\yjtin., City HaHFtmjishing Arcade Queen* streetj Auckland
