SWAMP FIRES.
During the past week or so, operations in the two great swamps lying on either side of Hamilton, have been pushed vigorously forward. So vigorously indeed that the atmosphere has been unpleasantly charged with smoke. Owing to the extreme dryness of the swamp vegetation, the fires have spread with astonish* ing rapidity, and in some places considerable damage has been done, though there has been nothing to warrant the alarm which some of our contemporaries seem to have caught. On the Waikato Land Associations property a portion of tke small bush at Hokonui has caught, "and a report was circulated on Thursday morning that the Waikato-Thames Railway formation had been destroyed. Mr Beere despatched one of the Public Works employes to the spot, and from htm We learn that the damage is trifling and only what might have been calculated upon. In Mr Williamsons swamp, the fire encroached upon the Ohaupo road and damaged a portion of the fencing on the farm at one time occupied Mr R. W. Hammond, as well as a few chains of posts aud wire fencing on Mr "Williamson'* own property. The season been has exceptionally favorable for work in the swamps and much progress may be expected to be made this summer.
