KIHIKIHI. (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.)

The Hod. the Attorney- General, accompanied by Major Jackson, F. A. Whitaker, E-q., Mr Stewart (District Engineer), and Mr W. G. Grace, met the chief Rewi here yesteiday, and handed over to him the full possession of his new house. The old chief, on receiving the key, seemed highly pleased, and as he inspected room after room — each elegantly finished, and each «is handsomely and comfortably furnished, and was told by the Attorney- General the purposes and uses for which the apartments were respectively adapted — he invariably, and with becoming dignity, bowed his acknowledgments; but, notwithstanding, he still adheres to his refusal to occupy until he receives the Crown grant, which he was told he would have, without fail, in about six weeks hence. Then, and not till then, will he give the promised " house-warming." It is, I learn, to be on a grand scale. Numerous native chiefs and European friends are to be invited, when he will make a speech setting forth his views relative to important matters affecting both races. Pursuant to a resolution passed at a recent meeting of the Town Board, Major Jackson and Messrs Moncrieffi and Farrell interviewed the Hon. the AttorneyGeneral, with a view to obtain a money grant from the Government of £100 towards the erection of a public hall. The deputation was courteously received, but the replies to their pressing 1 questions weie guarded and cautious; still, it is satisfactory to know that they were not left without hope. The matter, together with other things affecting the improvement of the township, when put in the shape of a petition, and given to our member (F. A. Whitaker, Esq.), shall, he said, receive his consideration and attention. — .(February 11.)
