THE LATE SHOW. TO THE EDITOR.
Sir.— lt is a great pity that such a disgraceful affair as the Show under the auspices of the "Farmers Club" Bhould have taken place in Cambridge on Thurs,* day last, A number of people were
called together from all parts of the province to Bee what ought to have been one of the best shows mr New Zealand but instead of that the first question asked by many on the ground was; where is the Show? When it "was found that there was not sufficient inducement to hold a show, notice should have been given at once, (there was sufficient time from the last day of entry) to the public to that i effect. It was a shame to accept the amount of money taken at the gates and give nothing in return. A considerable I sum was also raised by means of private subscriptions, but no money prizes were given to induce people to show. I should like to know for what object the j Club obtained the money. One portion I can understand went for a good feed. It | is hardly fair that the public should be called upon to give a dinner to ' the Club. Now, it is not right that such ' a state of things as this should continue ; either let us have a Fanners' Club> or none at all } it is time this plaything in Cambridge was done away with and something more useful and substantial put in its place. We $o not want a few exclusives banded together to usurp the place of better men. When the Farmers' Club 'was instituted it was understood to "be an institution for the benefit of all — really to be what the name implies. But what has it become ? The resort of -, the higher class to the exclusion of the real' bona fide cultivator 1 of the soil, and those who still have anything to do with it display less interest day by day. The general . feeling, in the district is becomfng antagonistic to the Club, and how 6an a show conducted by them be a success when they and the public fail to work together. In conclusion, I am not blind to the fact that .there are a few, a very few, good men 1 in the Club who in a better atmosphere might do much more for the district than they can ever hope to do in their present position. — I am, etc., ' Cambridge Farmer.
