TO THE EDITOR.

Sib, — Ip. your, issue of the 7th inst., a person signing himself " Correspondent " writes a letter from Raglan, in which he tries to prove that everyone but himself is. in the wrong. He says that he is becoming a convert to protection principles ; I am very glad to hear it, as it will give others a chance of making a living out of some of the professions that he must necessarily forego in. carrying out his protectionist doctrine. But perhaps his protectionist principles only extend to protecting himself against those who would dare to make a living without first consulting him ! If he is a storekeeper, why should he begrudge the carpenter his fee, and if he happens to be a chimneysweep he should not expeot to pocket the lawyer's or doctor's fee. He says, "The late constituted Queen of Raglan has paid the township a farewell visit, much to the satisfaction of its inhabitants." It is generally presumed by the inhabitants that he refers to the widow of our late respected pastor, and I think that they (the inhabitants) will join with me in giving that statement an unqualified denial, and that Mrs Schnakenber? has the sympathy of the whole community excepting "Correspondent" and one or two oi hisetampof Christians (P). Trusting that the correspond eat, with his conversion to protection principles, will also be converted to thinking of his fellowsettlers in a more Christian spirit. — I am, etc., Faib Play. Aotea, 20th October.
