THE CAMBRIDGE NORTH TOWNSHIP HIGHWAY DISTRICT.
TO THE EDITOR. Sh\ — Don't you feel very much surprised, if not disgusted, at the action taken by the five retiring members of the Board. They assembled in force on the day appointed for the election of trustees ; they were proposed in the' usual way, along with other gentlemen ; two of them declined to stand, but a very kind friend mustered courage to propose them in a batch. Poor fellows ! He could not sit down and ace those valuable men thrown overboard ! They had done so much for Duke-street, spent nearly £1000 and all we have to look at is Dukehtreet. All things went on very well, until they saw they were in a minority ; they could not stand it any longer ; they then kicked up a shindy and declared the meeting illegal. They have now entered into an agreement, and bound themselves to support each other, and put themselves into the Boai'd into opposition to the wish of the Ratepayers. lam surprised that five gentlemen holding such a position as they do, try to get into office, in such a way. Why don't they come forward and fight the battle openly and honestly? Fellow Ratepayers do you intend to allow your interests to be placed in their hands. Remember Saturday next 17th July at 1 o'clock in the Board room, is the time fixed for the election, come and look after your own interests, and see that justice is done, choose your three men, vote for those and no others. — Yours &c. Ratepayer.
[We quite fail to see in what way the five gentlemen forming the late Board are to blame for offering themselves in «i body for re-election : Such a course is perfectly honest and indeed usual. Ed.]
