THE RAILWAY EXTENSION.
The Committee re Te Awamutu railway celebration met in Devin's hotel on Saturday evening last, according to appointment. The members present were — Messrs Cunningham (chairman), Parsons, Floyd, Bosanko, Sloane, Farrell, Walton, Wilkinson, H. Roche, Foster, Wainwright, and Hutchinson. A communication was received from Major Jackson, apologising for his absence from their first meeting, through indisposition, but he hoped to be sufficiently recovered to attend the next meeting. He heartily approved of, and will assist them to celebrate so important an event as the opening of the railway in their midst. A letter was also received by the Chairman from Mr McMinn, regretting that he was unable to attend the first meeting through prior engagements. He will be most happy to assist and co-operate in any course the meeting may decide upon, to make the affair a success. A motion was brought forward by a member respecting a portion of the remaining surplus funds of the late Waikato Pastoral and Agricultural Association, the discussion of j which occupied the meeting for some time, as it was understood by several gentlemen present that the snrplus in question amounted to 1 some £25, and that it was set apart specially to be expended at the opening of the railway in holding an agricultural produce show. The subject was brought to a satisfactory termination by the following resolution, which was proposed by Mr Roche, seconded by Mr Floyd, and carried unanimously :—": — " That two members of the Committee be appointed to wait on Mr Mandeno to ascertain the names of the members of the Waikato Pastoral and Agricultural Association, re distribution of funds ; and thru wait upon those members and ask them to vot* the mo',u'\ toy purposes, iv connection
with the opening of the railway at Te Awarautu and a show of agricultural produce." The next matter brought forward was the programme for the day. An ox to be roasted whole on the ground near the station received a good deal of consideration, but after some time was. given up, and gave place to something more convenient and suitable for the occasion, viz., bread, cheese, sandwiches, and beer, which are to be supplied in abundance to all those who wish to partake of it gratis, on arrival of the train. The Te Awamutu Cavalry Band will, it is expected, be present.. The day will be closed by a public dinner, to be held in Te Awamutu, the tickets for which will be 5s ; but the Mayor of Auckland, Mr Fallon, the heads of the Railway Department, and other officials are to be invited.
