LAST NIGHT'S NEWS. [BY ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH.] (OWN CORRESPONDENT.) AUCKLAND, Last Night.
J. C. Young's Case. The cases brought by the Government against J. C. Young have completely broken through ; three being entirely withdrawn. The evidence disclosed a disgraceful state of things in connection with the Land Purchase System. The jury attached the following rider to their verdict of " Not Guilty " m one case :—: — "That the system of native land purchase expenditure, as disclosed by the evidence, is extremely loose and reprehensible, and affords no sufficient check against fraud by persons employed as agents. " His Honor remarked that that was the least they could say.
Sir George Gerey. It has been arranged that Sir George will address a public meeting of electors in Auckland at an early date, before proceeding South. He proposes coining to Auckland on "Wednesday next, if his health will permit, and addressing a meeting a few days later.
